Every fjord fishing trip from Tromsø looks similar in the photos: a boat, a rod over the side, a cod on deck. The differences are in the details. How many people share the boat, if you hold a rod the whole time or wait for your turn, what the crew does with the fish, and if any of it comes home with you.

Book on GetYourGuidePolar Adventures sails from Front Pier in central Tromsø. On the all-inclusive fishing option you fish from the boat, and the crew turns what is caught into fish soup for lunch. If the fishing is especially good, they prepare fillets for you to take home. Common catches are cod, haddock, coalfish and wolffish.
The same product also lists a sightseeing option without fishing, so choose one of the all-inclusive fishing options in the booking calendar. Reviewers mention too few rods for everyone and an unclear order of turns.

On the shared boats almost every fish is eaten on board, and each operator handles it differently. Polar Adventures cooks the catch into the fish soup that is served for lunch on its fishing cruise; only when the fishing is especially good does the crew prepare fillets for you to take home. On Hermes II the crew prepares what you land and serves it with butter and flatbread, next to a fish cake from Dragøy that everyone gets. On the two-hour trip the fish is cooked on board, and that is the meal: a day without a catch means snacks and drinks only.
The private boats work the other way round. Tromso Explorer is a registered tourist fishing business and includes the export papers, so the fish you keep can travel home with you. Common catches in the fjords around Tromsø are cod, haddock, coalfish and wolffish; one reviewer of the open-boat trip describes a halibut that was released again.
The rod count is where the shared trips differ most. On the two-hour trip every guest has a rod for the whole time. Hermes II has up to five rods in the water at once, so in a full boat you take turns, and you may bring your own. The Polar Adventures fishing cruise runs on the company’s fjord cruise boats; reviewers mention too few rods and an unclear order of turns. On a private boat the rods belong to your group.
Fish do not follow a timetable, and none of these trips promises a catch. It matters most on the two-hour trip, where there is no meal without fish, and least on the fishing cruise, where the soup is served either way. Weather counts too: on the two-hour trip, uncertain weather means the operator offers a new date or a refund, and the shared trips and the open boat can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start.
Fish leaving Norway in your luggage falls under a quota. According to Norwegian Customs, from 1 January 2026 each person aged 12 or over may take out 15 kg of fish, up to twice per calendar year; from 1 January 2027 the limit drops to 10 kg. The quota covers fish caught through a registered tourist fishing business, and you need a personal document from that business. That is why the private trips with export papers are the choice for anyone who wants fillets in the freezer at home. More on our page about fishing rules for visitors.

Every shared boat here hands out a thermal or insulated suit, and both private boats provide flotation suits. Under the suit you still want wool layers, a hat and gloves: on a moving boat the wind makes the deck far colder than the quay. Hermes II has a heated saloon to warm up in. See what to expect on board for more.
The critical reviews here are about the same things: few rods shared between many guests, and less fishing time than the length of the trip suggests. Hermes II states its rod limit itself, and the Polar Adventures cruise also stops for wildlife. The soup, the crews and the old wooden boat get praise even from the critics.
“Great tour. The crew was superb, very attentive. Lots of knowledge about the local wildlife and fjords. Freshly made soup was amazing, we both had two bowls!!”
“Great tour on a historic boat in Tromsø! We were able to catch and eat some haddock! Very experienced guides with extensive historical knowledge. Highly recommended!”
“Extremely poor value for money. There were only a few fishing rods on the boat. Two people fished as a group, and they also had to take turns with other groups. Each group had no more than half an hour of fishing time in total, and they might not even catch any fish. The cabin was also very stuffy and crowded. The only positive comment was for the fish soup, which was indeed very tasty.”
“It was an excellent experience. Our guide gave us excellent instructions and took good care of us, and we were able to catch several fish, which were then prepared deliciously on the return trip. Highly recommended :)”
“There were over 20 guests on the boat, but only 6 fishing rods, all with fake bait. The whole trip lasted 4.5 hours, with a total of over an hour of fishing time. They kept changing fishing spots, and some people didn't even catch a single fish. You can't take the fish you catch […]”
“Highly recommend, it’s private tour, so you can fishing all the trip and the guide is very nice and professional. […] Also can help clean the fish to bring to your home.”
“Roger and Thomas was very friendly and engaging. We managed to catch 1 fish each during our adventure. There was no lunch onboard, but they gave us the fish to bring back to cook by ourself. Definitely a fun and rewarding experience!”
“We saw some wildlife; however, the tour guide provided very little commentary, and the fishing time was very short, so we were unable to catch any fish.”
“Excellent trip that was well appreciated by my son who found the experience on an old fishing boat very atmospheric”
Reviews by guests after their trip, from GetYourGuide.
The two-hour trip with Polar Adventures gives every guest one rod for the whole trip, and on a private boat the rods belong to your group. On Hermes II up to five rods fish at the same time, so guests take turns. On the longer Polar Adventures fishing cruise reviewers mention waiting for a rod.
On the Polar Adventures fishing cruise, yes: a fish soup made from the catch. Hermes II serves a fish cake to everyone and your catch with butter and flatbread. On the two-hour trip there are snacks and drinks, and a cooked meal only if fish are caught.
Hermes II says you may bring your own rod. The other listings do not mention it, so ask the operator before you pack one.
On the shared boats the catch is eaten on board, apart from fillets after a very good day on the Polar Adventures cruise. To take fish home, book a private trip with Tromso Explorer, which includes the export papers. Norwegian Customs limits fish exports to 15 kg per person in 2026 and 10 kg from 2027.
Yes. When we checked the Polar Adventures calendar for a date in December, it offered a morning and an afternoon all-inclusive fishing cruise, both with fishing, lunch and a thermal suit. Choose one of those options when you book, as the same product also lists a sightseeing trip without fishing.
