In summer the sun barely sets over Tromsø, and a fishing trip can start after dinner. From about 19 May to 27 July the sun does not set at all, so the evening trips of Hermes II in that period can bring the midnight sun, weather permitting. The same wooden boat also sails by day; for the shore of Kvaløya or a private boat you leave the city centre.

From about 19 May to 27 July the sun stays above the horizon all night in Tromsø, so the evening fishing trip of Hermes II can show the midnight sun in that period, if the weather allows. Clouds can hide the sun even on those dates. If the midnight sun is the point of the trip, book early in your stay so that a cloudy evening can be followed by another.

On both Hermes II trips the crew prepares what you land and serves it on board with butter and flatbread, after a fish cake that everyone gets. One guest on a rainy August day describes cod cleaned on deck and boiled for a fisherman’s lunch. On Kvaløya the fish is boiled at the campfire. On the private open boat the fish is yours: Tromso Explorer includes the export papers, and a reviewer mentions help with cleaning it to take home. The export limits are on our page about fishing rules for visitors.
Pack for rain and wind, even in July. Hermes II hands out thermal suits on its day trip and has a heated saloon; the private open boat provides flotation suits and life jackets. For the shore trip, bring a waterproof layer and something warm for the evening at the fire. Reviewers on Hermes II describe both a perfect sunny day and a trip in steady rain that still went ahead. See what to expect on board for more.
Reviews from trips between May and August, on Hermes II by day and on the private open boat. The private guests also mention a slow first day, which is part of fishing; the evening trip and the shore trip have no reviews here yet.
“Fishing trip on Hermes II was absolutely fantastic. […] The rain didn't lessen the thrill when our 9-year old grandson pulled in 12-pound cods, twice! […] Part way through we were served hot fishcakes that hit the spot. Hot blackcurrant toddy kept us warm on the inside. And the fish we caught was cleaned on deck and boiled for a true fisherman's lunch.”
“Picked up and left at our airbnb. Good gear and suits for weather. This is the option for those who want to actually fish. […] Had a really good time, would definitely go again.”
“The crew was super friendly and accommodating. The weather on the day could not have been better. I was there for the third year in a row. It's always been worth it. I'll be back next year.”
“Paulis was the best!! We had a slow day the first day (it’s fishing, it happens plus we wanted to target halibut so we knew the risk of not getting any) so we booked a second day. He did everything possible to make sure we had the best experience. […]”
