The ice has to be thick enough before anyone can fish on it, and each operator sets its own dates. Skadi Adventures gives 5 January to 31 March for its trips on the sea fjord in Ullsfjord. GuideGunnar runs its lake trips on Ringvassøya from February to April. Hello Tromsø names no months for the Ramfjord trip; it depends on the fjord freezing over. The private trip with Rise Adventures has reviews from January and February. Before mid-January you are still in the polar night, when the sun does not rise, so early-season days are spent in twilight.
Ice fishing is mostly waiting next to a hole, and that is when the cold gets to you. Most trips hand out the outer layer: GuideGunnar provides thermal suit, boots, winter clothing and thermal underwear; Hello Tromsø a thermal suit and winter boots; Rise Adventures a thermal suit, boots and snowshoes. According to Visit Tromsø, GuideGunnar warns of temperatures down to minus 20 °C and does not allow jeans or trainers. Bring wool base layers, a warm hat, mittens over thin gloves and spare socks, even on the trips that provide a suit. More on our page about what to expect.
The private trip is the demanding one: Rise Adventures asks for medium to high fitness, with 30 to 60 minutes on snowshoes to the lake and up to two hours of walking without a path, and it is not suitable for people over 140 kg. GuideGunnar takes guests from 13 to 75 and spends about an hour and a half driving each way. The Ramfjord trip takes children from five and runs with five to fifteen guests. Best Kept Secret rates its Sjursnes trip at a medium activity level.
On the sea fjord with Skadi Adventures, the catch is cleaned and cooked at the base camp. GuideGunnar shows you how to fish and how to clean the fish, and lunch comes from the campfire. On the Ramfjord trip your catch is cooked over the fire, or you eat bidos, a Sami reindeer stew. Rise Adventures serves lunch at the lake; its reviewers mention trout and a fish stew. No trip promises a catch, so it is worth reading the meal as part of the day rather than as a reward for fishing well.
Sea fishing in Norway needs no licence, but fresh water is different. According to Visit Norway, fishing in lakes and rivers requires a licence. On the lake trips, ask the operator whether a licence is arranged for you before you go. The rules are summed up on our page about fishing rules for visitors.

Both reviews are from the private snowshoe trip with Rise Adventures, written after winter days on a mountain lake. The other ice fishing trips are new on GetYourGuide or listed only with Viator, so they have no reviews here.
“We had a great day with Jorgen snowshoeing and ice fishing! We managed to catch a trout and the kids had a great time learning how to fish. Jorgen can tailor this activity to suit your group (if it’s a private one you booked) […] We had a lovely camp fire and lunch in beautiful surroundings.”
“[…] We hiked up to a lake for about an hour, through light woodland next to a stream, in snowshoes to reach a lake which we walked across. We then learnt to drill holes with an auger, and each set up fishing lines which we then watched whilst having a picnic of fish stew and coffee. We caught 3 trout in total, which weighed up to 800g and in all, spent 9 hours out of Tromso. […]”

Roughly January to April, depending on the operator and the ice. Skadi Adventures fishes the sea fjord in Ullsfjord from 5 January to 31 March, and GuideGunnar runs lake trips from February to April.
The outer layer is provided on most trips: a thermal suit, and on several trips boots too. Underneath you need wool layers, a hat and mittens. GuideGunnar does not allow jeans or trainers, according to Visit Tromsø.
On some trips. The Ramfjord trip with Hello Tromsø takes children from five, and a reviewer of the private trip describes children learning to fish. GuideGunnar takes guests from 13. The private snowshoe trip needs medium to high fitness for the walk to the lake.
On the listed trips the catch is cooked and eaten during the day, at the base camp or over the fire. None of the ice fishing trips mentions taking fish home.
For fishing in lakes, Norway requires a licence, according to Visit Norway. On the sea fjord no licence is needed. Ask the operator of a lake trip whether it is included.
